Glasgow Cabbies Drive For Tourism
Glasgow's taxi drivers pulled out all the stops
when 5,000 delegates from the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) Congress came to town last September.
Their welcome was so impressive that the Americans have been singing the praises of Glasgow taxi
drivers ever since.
Now the Scottish Tourist Board, Greater Glasgow and ClydeValley Tourist Board
and A.S.T.A. have recognised their contribution to a conference that is believed to have generated
5 million for Glasgow and 25 million for Scotland.
Scottish Tourist Board Chairman, Lord Gordon
of Strathblane, seen here handing over a commemorative plaque to the Chairman of Glasgow Wide T.O.A.
Matt Sanderson, said : "In all of the post Congress research that we have conducted, the Glasgow taxi
drivers have shone through as outstanding ambassadors for their city and Scottish tourism. They really
made the Americans welcome and left a lasting impression upon them. " He went on to say, " It is that
type of welcome that is the hallmark of a successful trip, whether you are a conference delegate or
a leisure visitor and I would like it to become universally associated with a visit to Scotland."
